I meant to do this weeks ago but, well, vertigo and computers was a really bad combo, so I'm finally getting to my annual New Year's Questionnaire!
The annual questionnaire! )
polychrome_pen: (The adorable Tink and Terence!)
I seem to have done this questionnaire for several years running now, so it seemed to be the right time to dive back in and reassess! I want to write a proper 2014 Year In Review-style post, so that should be coming soon as well.

See the endless questions! )
polychrome_pen: (Deuce - Monster High)
I've been doing this fun thing for a few years now.  I expect a proper "Year in Review" and "My Year in Toys" will come along later. :)

Meme-tastic! )
polychrome_pen: (Aladdin and Jasmine - my OTP!)
I hope that everyone is on track to have a wonderful 2013.  2012 was a little bit of a bipolar year - I spent most of the first half in a pretty deep funk, only to be finally lifted out of it by Anime Expo mid-year, so I'm definitely hoping I don't lose half a year again. XD  If anyone wants to fill out the questions behind the cut on their own, feel free to snatch this!  I'd love to read some more!

New Year's Meme behind the cut! )

I somehow forgot to do this meme last year!

Comment to this entry and I'll give you a letter. List ten things that you love that begin with that letter and then post that list on your LJ.

I was given the letter M:

1. Money
Something I think I never have enough of.
2. Merlin and Morgana
In almost any incarnation, though I'm particularly fond of their character's portrayal in the Merlin TV series.
3. Magic
Of both the literary and stage varieties.  Princess Tenko is a neat combination of both. :)
4. Marvel Comics
Or rather, the cartoons based on them. I never had enough patience to try and catch up with the modern Marvel universe comics, though I enjoyed what I read of the Ultimate Marvel Universe.
5. Movies
Sci-Fi/Fantasy and Rom-Coms in particular are always enjoyable.  And movies based on books.
6. Mythology
Greek/Roman is my favorite, though Egyptian and Norse are pretty awesome as well. The Sumerian story of Gilgamesh is pretty awesome as well.
7. The Moon
A huge rock in space that reflects light AND controls the tide? How can that not be awesome.
8. Microbiology
I believe this is the only field of scientific study aside from zoology where you can get a plush incarnation of what you're studying.
9. Muppets
This love started with Muppet Babies and Yoda, but has really expanded in the last couple of years as I've gotten my hands on more Muppet material (especially The Muppet Show, which is just genius).
10. Mountains
That geologic upheaval can make such stately and impressive things always takes my breath away. Literally if I'm actually trying to climb one.

The first five people to comment in this post get to request that I draw a doodle of any pairing/character of their choosing. In return, they have to post this in their journal, regardless of their ability level.

Actually, you don't have to post this, but it's more fun if you do. :)

1. [livejournal.com profile] chrismactaggact - Sky and Christine
2. [livejournal.com profile] rhapsodyinpink - Varan and Shilly
3. [livejournal.com profile] rainbow_canuck - Pundarik and Geri
4. [livejournal.com profile] dreaming_faerie - Alice and Zell
5. [livejournal.com profile] crystalheart - Princess Gwenevere and Drake

These will hopefully get done over the remainder of the week and the weekend. :D

+ Post 10-20 of any pictures currently on your hard drive that you think are self-expressive.
+ NO CAPTIONS!!! It must be like we're speaking with images and we have to interpret your visual language just like we have to interpret your words.
+ They must ALREADY be on your hard drive - no googling or flickr! They have to have been saved to your folders sometime in the past. They must be something you've saved there because it resonated with you for some reason.
+ You do NOT have to answer any questions about any of your pictures if you don't want to. You can make them as mysterious as you like. Or you can explain them away as much as you like.

I wish I had a Yosemite picture. But alas, though I have 3,657 pics of Yosemite, none are on this computer! )

Association Meme: Comment to this post and I will give you 5 subjects/things I associate you with. Then post this in your LJ and elaborate on the subjects given.

From [livejournal.com profile] dreaming_faerie:

1) Winx Club
The show I never expected to fall in love with like I have. I'm actually a latecomer to the Winx fandom as well. The first episode I ever saw was Season 3, Episode 1! And it pretty much captured me - probably having something to do with the Omega Dimension/Trix/Baltor/Ice Snakes. Well, after that first episode, I repeatedly watched the opening song and downloaded the first season (I happily own it on DVD now), watched it in a week, watched Season 3, Episode 2, and downloaded Season 2 (which I also own on DVD now), and watched it the next week. After that, I was hooked and the rest is...history?
This show got me back into writing/creative things after a really long "dry spell" too. So it's like the spiritual successor to Jewel Riders in that respect.

2) 80s Cartoons
Well, being born in 1985, I didn't actually get to watch many of these great toons when they first ran, but I devoured them in reruns!
Some 80s childhood favorites: Transformers, Dinosaucers, TMNT, Muppet Babies, Gummi Bears, Duck Tales, Alvin and the Chipmunks, Inspector Gadget
Some 80s current favorites: He-Man/MOTU, Jem, Dungeons and Dragons
Some I still want to see: GI Joe, She-Ra, Galaxy Rangers

3) Aladdin and Jasmine
One of my absolute favorite OTPs. I think they have one of the best dynamics of all the Disney couples. This may be because we got to see so much more of them through the two sequels and the animated series. :)
They've got real quirks too - like Aladdin is totally prideful, and Jasmine gets bent of a shape really easily over little things. That imperfection just adds to their charm to me.

4) Sarah Brightman
My absolute favorite musician. I've been lucky enough to see her perform live twice now, and each time I was blown away. She's pushing 50, and her voice is still AMAZING. Plus, she's always trying new things. They may not always work, but I like it that she's still growing as a musician.
The first CD of hers I listened to was La Luna, and it was pretty much instant love. That was back in 1999 or 2000, and I've enjoyed every CD since. And pretty much every previous CD as well (except perhaps Fly, which I have very mixed feelings about). Nobody will ever be Christine (in Phantom of the Opera) to me like Sarah; the part was basically written for her, after all.
And when she hits those high notes, protect your crystal glassware! :D

5) RPing
Playing over at [livejournal.com profile] winxclubrpg has been one of the most fun experiences I've ever had. Even if it's incredibly time-consuming and constantly draws me away from necessary schoolwork. XD
It's the first time I've ever RPed, and I love how it not only improves your writing on a technical level, but teaches you to really get inside a character's head and see what motivates them.
Did I mention how addicting and fun it is? It's kind of like drugs for writers - you get instant feedback, creative collaboration, and the ability to play in somebody else's universe! :)

~~~***~~~
Midterm update: Only five hours of sleep last night. Joy! Thankfully we have tomorrow off to study for the last midterm on Friday.
Also, I am so weak. Collecting instinct took over and I just bought this lot of Italian Winx on eBay to complete my collection. Though I still want the Trix!
Association Meme: Comment to this post and I will give you 5 subjects/things I associate you with. Then post this in your LJ and elaborate on the subjects given.
From [livejournal.com profile] tanz_fanatkia:
1) Brandon
Probably my favorite character in all of Winx Club. In almost every fandom, I end up picking a favorite guy and gal. Often (though not always), they're a couple. Stella is my favorite of the Winx girls (it was Flora for a while, but upon rewatching the series, my Stella love was reaffirmed), and her lines are actually one of my favorite parts of the show. So I guess it's only natural that I grew to love Brandon and Stella as a couple. It helps that they've got the most realistic relationship on the show. :) And now I'm kind of obsessed with Brandon. Like to the point of buying the Italians because they made a Brandon doll.
Plus, I can totally see myself getting along with him really well. XD
2) Jewel Riders
I've been a fan of this show since it first came out in 1995, and have been with the fandom pretty much the whole time. My best friend and I were obsessed with this show and all its related merchandise. I'm on a quest to get all the toys in mint condition (still lacking a Sunstar and the Deluxe line), and still have my original Drake.
But what really keeps this show close to my heart is how creative it inspired me to be. I was doodling fanart and making up fanfics for this show before the internet taught me what those were. XD I'm still writing fanfics for this (you can find part of one on fanfiction.net), and even doodle up some art now and then. :D
3) Enchanted Forest Chronicles (those were so good)
This is my absolute favorite book series. I own the set in five different forms (hardcover, one volume edition, and three different softcover editions), and am hoping to get some more.
I always used to rent them from the library, but they only had the first three. It was like torture, always wondering what happened to Cimorene, Mendanbar and Daystar! It was like pure joy when I discovered the magic of inter-library loan and finally got to read the fourth book.
These books are so witty and amusing, and came out long before it was "hip" to spoof fairy tales. Way ahead of the curve.
The short story "Utensile Strenth" in Patricia C. Wrede's Book of Enchantments short story collection also features these characters, and whenever I read it always makes me hope beyond hope that someday she'll write a fifth book in this series.
4) Disney
I love Disney like whoa. As a child, my mother reminds me that every time I had the chance to pick out a movie to watch on VHS, I would inevitably come back with our copy of 101 Dalmatians. I wanted a Dalmatian so bad. But I got a Sheltie instead. XD Haha...I love her dearly though, and want another one!
But my real love of Disney came about because of my best friend (same one from Jewel Riders), who was obsessed with Snow White and The Little Mermaid. Like to the point of having the entire movies memorized, and reciting them frequently. Well, he now works at Disneyland, but I think because of him I took a real liking to not only Disney, but animation as a whole.
These days I tend to enjoy the more fantasy-style Disney movies like Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, Hunchback of Notre Dame, Atlantis, etc. But dang if I don't still love Dalmatians. XD
5) Jem
I'm actually a really recent addition to the Jem fandom. I think I watched my first Jem episodes only about two years ago. I still need to finish watching the series, too.
Jem is so different from any cartoon I've ever seen - it's all about pop music, bands, and fame, but for an 80s/90s toon it's incredibly sophisticated. It has some of the best writing I've ever seen in a cartoon. And for that, I love it.
Plus, the dolls came with cassette tapes! How awesome is that?
Tagged by the lovely [livejournal.com profile] dreaming_faerie
A. Each tagged person must post 8 things about themselves on their journal.
B. At the end, you have to choose and tag 5 people.
1. I started piano lessons 1.5 years ago (right before starting Pharmacy School - not the wisest decision I ever made). I played as a kid, but gave it up for clarinet. And the oboe, which I played for one year and hated.
2. I absolutely love apples and apple-flavored things. Especially if they are baked goods. XD
3. The only foreign country I have ever visited is Canada (and how foreign is that?). After graduation, I want to go to Great Britain or Italy. Or maybe France.
4. I am a Bibliophile. My room is literally awash in a sea of reading material.
5. I have been an anime fan for about twelve years. My first anime was Naussica of the Valley of the Wind, but it was a really crappy copy and hard to tell what was really going on, so I tend to count Oh My Goddess! as my first anime.
6. I am prone to bouts of horrible nostalgia, even if things way back when weren't always that great. I mean like pulling out old home/school videos and settling down for the night with a pot of coffee. Rose tinted glasses much?
7. My first "fandom" was Princess Gwenevere and the Jewel Riders. I vividly remember drawing this all the time in class, making up fanfics (even though I didn't know that was what they were called at the time), and collecting the toys. I'm still super fond of this show.
8. I will only drink diet soda. Normal soda tastes really odd to me now after drinking diet for so many years. I have been ridiculed about this by waitresses in restaurants. XD
I'll refrain from tagging anyone, but I would love to read all your responses!
Also, I think I'm getting sick. I felt rather feverish this afternoon, and ended up crashing on the couch instead of doing my Pharmacy Law reading. I've got a few body aches as well. Sigh...so not what I need with Midterms around the corner.
polychrome_pen: (Default)
Eheh...yeah. This is so late it's not even funny - but I really wanted to do it again this year!
Overall, a decent year. )
Day 8: 12/18
Wow...this is the last day of these, huh? I can believe I actually remembered to post one every day. XD
I was happy today having sushi with some of my friends, and also watching Ouran High School Host Club! Seriously, that is a hilarious/super addicting anime. I'm ashamed I hadn't started watching it until now. I think I devoured my way through about ten episodes today *insert look of shame here*.
In other unrelated news, I've been reading my way through the original Peter Pan, which is rather delightful, even though I sometimes can't follow the language. XD
polychrome_pen: (Default)
Day 7: 12/17
Whoops...almost forgot to do this today.
Today happy thing was finally finishing Aladdin the Animated Series. I burned through the last 12 episodes today to end probably one of my most drawn-out watchings ever. I seriously think I started watching it over a year ago. XD
Fun show, though sometimes it really slips. And now I hate the phrase "Semi-phenomenal, nearly cosmic."
Yeah, it really can't hold a candle to yesterday's happy thing, but what can? :D
polychrome_pen: (Default)
Day 6: 12/16
So if you can't guess that today's happy thing was seeing Sarah Brightman in concert, you obviously weren't reading yesterday's entry. :D
The concert was A-MAZING. Of course, I didn't expect anything less. :D
She did lots of songs from her album Symphony and even some from her brand-new A Winter Symphony. There was the obligatory Phantom of the Opera (title song) and Time to Say Goodbye performances as well, among other songs from her various albums. Phantom was amazing because she's still got it - she can still hit that incredibly high note at the end more than twenty years later!
I didn't like the stage quite as well as the one from the Harem Tour. It involved more projection technology though, which was neat. I was a little sad she didn't actually fly up on the wires in this performance though. :(
Oh well, it was still completely amazing. It's always funny for me to hear her speaking voice, which is cute-as-a-button British and mousy, and then hear her belt out these songs. :D
polychrome_pen: (Default)
Day 5: 12/15
Today was very odd. I spent almost the entire day with an old friend just doing random stuff.
But I had a Vanilla Buttercream cupcake at Barnes and Noble, which made me exceedingly happy. :D
And I go see Sarah Brightman in concert tomorrow!
polychrome_pen: (Default)
Day 4: 12/14
I'm happy I had a nice time at the Christmas Party. It was kind of a stressful (and tiring) day at work, and then I almost spilled all my Chocolate Truffle Cookies getting into the car (and trying to hold an umbrella at the same time due to the rain), and was generally in a bad mood before I arrived.
But I had a nice time, even though I don't usually like big social gatherings. They make me super tired! But still, I was super sleepy. Six hours on your feet + beings social = tired Ry. Thank God there was coffee at the party. :D
polychrome_pen: (Default)
Day 3: 12/13
I was happy today singing for the supposed last time with my choir. There are rumors that someone might come in and take over, but even if they do, it won't be the same without Claudia as our director. :( I'll miss our spitfire Latina. So I guess this was really more bittersweet than happy.
Also, I'm going to a Christmas program tonight and making my Chocolate Truffle Cookies for a party tomorrow! :D
polychrome_pen: (Default)
Day 2: 12/12
Today, I couldn't stop smiling at the cover of the Christmas Card I'm sending out. Also, I bought Tales of Beedle the Bard today at Target for only $7.50!
Also, the Princess and the Pea was a wonderful play! Kind of campy, but ultimately very fun - and isn't that what counts?
Follow to see my epic-fail attempt at drawing Reindeer! )
If anyone still wants a Christmas card after seeing that travesty, PM me with your address. XD
