For Christmas Specials and movies! :D

Seriously, my list of Christmas-themed things to watch has really grown in the last couple of years. It all goes back to childhood, really, where every year my family watches four holiday specials:
1. A Charlie Brown Christmas
2. Garfield's Christmas Special
3. Frosty the Snowman
4. Mickey's Christmas Carol

We used to watch them all off of tapes we recorded from TV, complete with old commercials and bits of the specials missing. XD Slowly, we've finally gotten copies of those all on DVD by now. Though I definitely miss seeing the Seven-Up commercial.

Other specials that I only started watching a year or two ago include:
5. How the Grinch Stole Christmas
6. Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer

Grinch is the animated one - not that live-action Jim Carrey monstrosity. Rudolph I only started after buying a horde of plush reindeer when I worked at CVS. Rudolph was one of them, naturally.

As far as full-fledged movies go, I like to watch the following every year:
7. Beauty and the Beast - The Enchanted Christmas
8. It's a Wonderful Life
9. The Muppet Christmas Carol

It's funny, because I actually hated Beauty and the Beast - The Enchanted Christmas when it first came out in 1997, but over time it's really grown on me. It's a Wonderful Life is really a classic, and Mom and I cry at the end EVERY TIME. It's just such a touching scene.
The Muppets got Michael Caine to play Scrooge! Michael Caine! It's a great musical version of a Christmas Carol, and the large-scale Muppets they use for the three ghosts are just fantastic.

More recently, I added the two Barbie Christmas movies to my yearly lineup.
10. Barbie in the Nutcracker
11. Barbie in a Christmas Carol

After seeing the Nutcracker ballet in SF, I picked up the Barbie version, which tries to fill out the story a little bit. It was the first Barbie animated movie as well, and it's always interesting to see how far the animation in those productions has come in almost ten years. Christmas Carol is a better movie, and I love the Victorian setting. Extra points for Barbie being dressed in the 2008 Holiday Barbie outfit during the beginning and ending sequences.

This year, I added two more movies.
12. He-Man and She-Ra: A Christmas Special
13. Disney's A Christmas Carol

It was really fun watching the He-Man special after watching all of She-Ra this summer. Having the whole cast together really felt like a nice endcap. The plot is kind of ridiculous, but Skeletor really gets the best lines!
I have to admit I was skeptical about Disney's Christmas Carol - after all it was made by the same people who did the Polar Express, which I think is kind of boring. Plus the characters fall into the "Uncanny Valley" where they look just a little too real for animated characters, which makes them a bit creepy. The movie itself was good, but still fell prey to the Uncanny Valley a bit (though not nearly as bad as Polar Express).

Whew! That's more than I thought. Christmas really is one of my favorite times of year, and these specials really are a part of that. It's fun to have something you only watch once a year. :)

Anyway, what specials do you enjoy this time of year?

Or rather, a lack thereof. I totally didn't get back into writing during my November. Something between a lack of motivation and time ended up being my downfall, I think. Barely cracked a thousand words.

Thanksgiving was really nice, though. The forces of the universe must have all been in harmony, because I had Thursday through Monday off (five days total!), and it was really awesome. Did some shopping on Black Friday, but ended up spending more on Amazon and the Matty Collector Cyber Monday sale (Battle Cat is MINE). Still, it was great to spend the time just browsing around with my family and enjoying the beginning of the holiday shopping season.

I got a Christmas tree in Target (before Thanksgiving!) and now have it proudly set up with a few ornaments. Others should be hung this weekend when I have a bit more time. Just having the lights on really cheers me up after a long day at work, though! Ah, I'm such a sucker for all things Christmas.

Speaking of which, let me know if you want a Christmas card! I'm going to be working on them this weekend.

This is the first Christmas season that I've really spent away from home (not counting last year on my rotations when I went home every weekend), and I really miss the little things, like Mom making cookies and decorating the tree together. Watching Christmas specials or just enjoying the lights of the tree with a hot drink. I've got a few days off coming up in the middle of a week, and I think I'm going to go home and just try to soak up a little of that Christmas spirit that feels somehow lacking so far this year.

In other news, toys shopping in my new town was abysmal until a little while ago when I found not only the Wal-Mart exclusive DCUC Zatanna and Kamandi, but the Monster High plush Deuce and Cleo as well! I was so excited to FINALLY find something I'd been looking for actually in my area. If only I could snag a set of the Gloom Beach dolls. Though I did find out that a TRU Express opened up in the outlets just down the freeway from me, so I'm planning to check them on Monday and see if they've got the new MOTU Classics 2 packs or the new Fashionista Kens.

Anyway, I'm off to bed. These 10:30 to 9:00 days are really draining me; they're just so insufferably long and it feels as though they take up my entire day.

While walking through Target today, I stumbled on their Christmas section. Which led me to the Christmas Music Sampler display. Which led to me walking out with two Christmas CDs.

I am so easily swayed to buy things this time of year. But I've already listened to one of them, and drank a Chai Tea Latte. This combo never fails to make me feel better. :D

Now back to writing!

I'd like to send out Christmas cards to everyone, but I really need addresses! My address book is sadly out of date. So please PM me your address if you would like a card. :)

Today at work was epic fail. I was at Longs from 9 am to 7 pm. NINE FREAKING HOURS. I really am so dead. My feet feel like ground meat.

This all happened because two people didn't show up today. Because of my overactive conscience I couldn't just leave the Pharmacist with one other helper until eight o'clock, so I volunteered to stay. And not only did I extend my shift, but two other people had to as well so the day would be covered! Suffice to say none of us were amused. Haha, and my Pharmacist told me that the day after Christmas would be a nice quiet day, too! WRONG. It was super busy and filled with tons of weird insurance problems and terrible (worse than usual!) handwriting on the part of the docs.

Plus, this came off of tons of driving yesterday on Christmas Day, so I was tired just going into work. San Francisco on Sunday had better be worth this trouble of switching days!

And going back farther, Christmas Eve was kind of weird too. My Aunt got stomach flu, so she and my Uncle stayed home, and we ended up just having my cousin (their son) and his family over for dinner and a few presents. It was a little odd - and when my cousin's kids are involved, it is also very tiring. I feel like I've come off of a three-day long roller coaster.

Plus there was too much food and self-control flew out the window. I've felt a bit sick; almost want to go on a really strict diet here and now.

But presents and seeing family I love did brighten the holidays! A selection of favorites:
- Star Trek Voyager Season 7 (I own them all now)
- Pharmacy Sweatshirt and Woolly jacket (I love them both)
- Sleeping Beauty DVD
- eBay giftcard (fueling my addiction)
- Seeing Grandma. :D

Anyway, I'm super bushed, so I think I'll just crawl into bed and sleep for a week kthxbye. :D

I hope your holidays were less exhausting than mine!

The last couple of days have been busy, but pretty enjoyable. Currently, I'm simply enjoying the wonderful Christmas music on the stereo, roaring fireplace, and hot tea. I always get ridiculously sentimental during the Christmas season, and this year is no different. :)

Yesterday, some friends and I went ice-skating and had dessert in Sacramento, which was fun. However, I didn't get back until pretty late at night (close to 1:00, which is pretty late to be out for me), and therefore work was kind of miserable. I made a several careless mistakes which really embarrassed me; I need to buck up a little at work and do better. Maybe it's just because I've been so tired lately.

However, last night really was fun. I'm pretty epic fail at ice-skating (haha, like careening into the railing to stop myself kind of fail!), but the dessert place was awesome. Super good cannoli and cakes! Definitely diet-busting. Oh well, that's what New Year's Resolutions are for! XD

I excited also because my firewire cable arrived in the mail this week! This means I can finally start porting my home movies (like I said, ridiculously sentimental) over to the computer for editing.

On the reading front, I finally picked up Peter Pan in Scarlet, which has lain around dormant for probably two years unread. This is a shame, as I am totally loving it so far (possibly even more than the original novel!).

So I leave you all with my goals for this week:
1. Make it through Christmas with my crazy extended family
2. Finish my damn Winx fic already!
3. Finally go see Twilight - even if only for the lulz
4. Try to not become a blimp with all the good food around!

Day 3: 12/13

I was happy today singing for the supposed last time with my choir. There are rumors that someone might come in and take over, but even if they do, it won't be the same without Claudia as our director. :( I'll miss our spitfire Latina. So I guess this was really more bittersweet than happy.

Also, I'm going to a Christmas program tonight and making my Chocolate Truffle Cookies for a party tomorrow! :D
