Though upon reflection, the training ground of cursed springs would fit right in in Oz. They could all jump in and genderflip whenever they want!
It's been ages since I read the books, but I remember feeling like Baum thought of the "he's a transformed princess!" thing at the last moment and didn't foreshadow it at all.
