I'm not sure how kick-ass they ended up being, but this was fun. :D Also, way longer than I originally intended XD

28. Kick-Ass Character (Featuring Z’neth and Peak)

“Are you ready for this, little brother?” Z’neth asked Peak as their dragons Riptor and Wing Storm circled the top of Warnado. The spotlight that normally shone like a beacon from the gaping nozzle of the rusted warship flickered as thousands of gremwings massed below the pair. It looked to Z’neth like a screeching cloud of death attempting to block their access.

Peak winked at Z’neth, a wry grin plastered on his face. “No way a bunch of gremwings are going to stop us now. Dread doesn’t get away with kidnapping Summit and Apex and expecting his bugs to hold us back!”

“Let’s unleash Orak’s little surprise for them, shall we?” Z’neth asked, holding up the silver cylinder that the Chief Technician had given them before taking off from Airlandis.

Peak barked a laugh. “Wouldn’t want to disappoint the old man!”

Z’neth dropped the cylinder. As it fell, the cylinder emitted a high pitched siren, and the gremwings began to swarm around it until the device had disappeared from view inside the cone. “Time for the fireworks,” Z’neth said as he activated the secondary function with the press of a button.

The device went off with a concussive blast, spraying nanite-laced foam all over the opening of the ship and plastering hundreds of gremwings and a few unlucky Dark Dramen to the inner steel plates of the ship.

Peak let out a whoop and dove into the fray, Wind Jammers blazing and picking off the the baddies “lucky” enough to not get caught in the initial blast. Z’neth followed, Riptor angling almost vertical in his dive through the gaping maw of the battleship. Ahead, Z’neth saw Dark Dramen beginning to pour through the side openings.

“What do you say we stop this nasty flow, Riptor?” Z’neth asked, loading two smaller versions of Orak’s cylinders into his Wind Slammer launchers. As the blue dragon gave a roar and zoomed past the openings, Z’neth stretched out both arms and fired the cannisters. They exploded in clouds of the nanite foam that began to course through the hallways like blood through arteries sweeping the troops away. Z’neth couldn’t help but smile.

Peak let out another whoop as he picked off a few mutant troops. “Why so slow, Big Z?” Peak yelled back above the chaos surrounding them.

“Someone has to make sure you stay alive,” Z’neth called back. “Father would be a little irritated if I let you come home with another scar!”

“Then you better start doing your job now!” Peak yelped as three Dark Dramen on bulky dragons began lifting up toward them from the bottom of the shaft.

Z’neth yelled “Maximize!” before jumping off Riptor. He plummeted feet-first in a controlled dive down the shaft, until the sole of his boot connected with the chest of a Dark Dramen, knocking the brute from the back of his dragon. Z’neth whipped his Wind Jammers in a wide arc, unseating the other two Dark Dramen in the process.

“Teach me that move next time, yeah?” Peak said with a low whistle as he landed next to Z’neth.

Z’neth simply grunted. “Time enough for that after we rescue our siblings.”

“Who says we need to be rescued?” Apex said with a low chuckle as she and Summit emerged from one of the tunnels, wiping nanite-foam off their arms. “Except perhaps from the two of you!”

“What is this stuff, anyway?” Summit said, sticking out his tongue and trying to get the nanite-foam off his boot. “We almost got trapped along with the pack of Dark Dramen guarding us!”

“We’ll tell you all about it on the way home,” Peak said, using the deactivator ray that Orak had provided to shut down the nanites and stop their replication. “But first, I want to savor the sight of you two looking like snowmen!”

16. Dominant Character - Dark Wing (Dragon Flyz)

(I wanted to play with not only the character’s dominance here, but also Z’neth struggle for dominance in his own body.)


As Dark Wing pressed a button on the whip’s handle, the coil surrounding the tail hummed to life and began to glow a dull, throbbing red. “Here me, mutants of Warnado!” Dark Wing’s voice rang out across the assembled forces of his Father’s military. “I - like my father your king, will not stand for treason!” There was a hard edge in Dark Wing’s voice, each word meant to cut, wound, and instill fear in his subordinates.

This is not who I am.

A line of Dark Dramen and mutant warriors were lined up in front of Dark Wing, chained to posts and stripped to their loincloths. Their recent attempt on his life would cost them theirs.

“Your fellow warriors before you have forgotten to whom their allegiance lies. Let their failures be a reminder to all of you that in Warnado We. Do. Not. Suffer. Traitors.” The words were sharp, stacatto.

Do not do this, Z’neth. Do not give in to hate. To fear. To suffering. These are Dread’s tools.

Dark Wing’s clawed hand gripped tight the whip’s handle as pain split through his head. At every turn - every second of every day The Voice pestered him. Questioned his judgement. His right to rule. His very existence. His Father and Gangryn warned him the hated Dragon Flyz had experimented on him during his time as a prisoner in Airlandis. Had tried to change him.

Dark Wing knew they would ultimately fail. Nothing could deny him his birthright. Certainly not the vermin laid out before him.

Your birthright lies not in this stinking hellhole. It lies in the clouds. The hated Voice spoke again, showing him images of Airlandis, the golden city that had for so long eluded their grasp.

With a cry of torment, Dark Wing pushed down The Voice, further than he had ever push before. And for the first time in months, it was silent. Taking a deep steadying breath, Dark Wing raised the red-hot energy whip and brought it down across a mutant’s wings, savoring the smell of burnt flesh and screams of pain.

The Dragon Flyz were next.

Heh, I've never really tried writing Dark Wing I want to write "Duck" here so badly, so this was an interesting exercise for me. I really kind of think of him/Attor as your character at this point. XD
