Toy Update

My Icy and Stormy Italians arrived last week, along with Tecna, Musa, and Layla. Still no Darcy yet. *grump* I really hope she shows up tomorrow. I ended up breaking March Moratorium as well to use my 10% off eBay coupon - but it went to Bloom and Sky (Mattel) royal set, so it was for a good cause! I'll probably have a massive deboxing party over my Spring Break and snap pics/write the reviews then.
Also, my desire for Taeyangs and Pullips has grown almost exponentially. Those of you who own them, could you answer some questions for me?
1. What is the deal with staining? I see things everywhere that dark clothes can stain these dolls. What can be done to prevent/protect against this?
2. Are these dolls fairly sturdy, or fragile? I know there are different body types.
3. What are "obitsu" bodies?
3. About how big are these dolls?
That's all I can think of right now, but if you know any pitfalls for first-time owners, don't hesitate to share!
I have to work extra training hours at Longs during our conversion to CVS, and I believe that money will go toward some Taeyangs and Pullips. For Taeyangs, I really want Jade, Shade and Rayne, and Pullips are Veritas, Clarity, and Nahh-ato. I have also been reading the awesome
plastiqphantasy and her awesome pic fics, and think this has pushed me over to edge to want these dolls.

Date: 2009-03-23 12:26 pm (UTC)2) I'd say fragile compared to most dolls. Type 1 bodies tend to loosen. Type 2's have the staining issues and sometimes the body parts will fall out. (Though they go right back in.) Type 3 has the worst thing. Their wrists can crack, leaving you with a doll with broken hands. They sometimes come this way right out of the box. Type 4 is the newest body, only used since January, and I like it second best after Type 2. I'm not sure if people are having problems with it yet. Honestly, they're not a Barbie, but they're not fine china either. If you handle them properly, you'll probably never see breakage. Unless you're unlucky with a Type 3. That's the only incident of breakage I've ever had that wasn't my own fault. The boys are way more sturdy than the girls, too.
3) Obitsus are different bodies you can buy and switch the Pullip's head onto. It's not an easy process though. All mine are still on their stock bodies.
4) They're on the same scale with 11.5"/12" fashion dolls. Their heads are just really big. Here's a picture of my Mattel Tecna next to one of the boys:

Any other questions, just let me know. I've had a lot of these over the years. I recommend buying from PullipStyle. They're the nicest US sellers. I also recommend checking out lots of owner pics of Nahh-ato. I had her and she's...really not cute in person.

Date: 2009-03-23 07:33 pm (UTC)I was definitely looking at Pullip Style (mostly because they've got the best prices). There's a Jade for sale in
Nahh-ato really appealed to me because of the whole djinn thing (plus she's one of the few darker girls), but the more I look at her face, the more annoyingly shiny it seems. Like it's made from really cheap plastic. She's probably going to go off of my want list. Was there anything else that made her unappealing in person?

2) I agree with everything tanz_fanatika said, except about the Taeyangs. They don't tend to be broken out of the box like some Pullips, but they do have some big weaknesses, mainly in their wrists and ankles. Just be SUPER careful when posing hands/feet, or removing shoes. The pegs tend to snap easily, and since it's so common, it can be hard to get a replacement. There also isn't really a good Taeyang replacement body as there is with Pullip (in my opinion). My first Taeyang I broke his wrist five minutes out of the box. After that I learned my lesson though, and none of my boys have had a breakage since *knocks on wood*.
3) Obitsu bodies for Pullips, in my opinion, are the only way to go. I am so spoiled by Obitsu, I really can't stand ANY of their stock bodies. They're really flexible, extremely sturdy (especially compared to the stock bodies) and really quite pretty. Unlike the stock bodies. All of my Pullips, and even my Dals, are on them. It's not too hard to replace Pullip sized obitsus (27cm), but in my experience, the Dal sized (25cm?) are a pain. There are some good tutorials on PullipStyle, and it looks intimidating at first. Once you do it though, it's no big deal. If you're considering obitsu bodies, I highly recommend JunkySpot. I won't buy obitsus from anybody else, and the shipping for both JunkySpot and PullipStyle is great. If I order and pay for them both on the same day, I usually get them both two days later. :)
4) The size is like ... barbie/fashion doll with a big head. Pullips can wear most Barbie and similar sized fashion doll clothes, while Taeyang does good with Ken clothes, though they tend to fit a bit on the big side.
Also, I can't say much about the others on your want list but Jade is GORGEOUS in person. But I really love my Jade, so I might be a bit biased. :P

Date: 2009-03-24 06:17 pm (UTC)If the wrists or ankles break, is there a way to repair them and still keep the wrist/ankle's mobility?

Date: 2009-03-24 10:35 pm (UTC)I think there might be topic on Pullip Style on different suggestions, but I don't remember.
But for me, wrist breakage happened on Luca, my blondie. Bet ya can't tell which one! :P My solution was that I crazy glued it in place (and my fingers together too, but that's another story). I can rotate his hand very carefully, but I can't move it side to side, or front to back. It's easy enough to get used to, and not really so bad. But hey, you take what you get, eh?
Oh, and I just noticed your mention of my story in there! Thanks! Heh. I'm glad I could help convert you. :P
