Well, at least today wasn't totally wasted.
Because of Easter, my college gives us Monday off as a "Travel Day." I have a really light day (only one class!) on Monday, so I always feel a little cheated when we have Monday holidays. Why could they wipe out my thirteen-hour Tuesdays? Oh well, a vacation is a vacation.
After Lori's great post about the Winx dolls over in
winx_club, I was inspired to go and search some out so I could start my own collection. This morning, I checked Marshalls, Wal-Mart, Ross, and K-Mart, all without success. It was a little disheartening to say the very least. However, at K-Mart I did manage to snag Z'neth (one of the new line of Dragon Flyz toys by Play Along) for five dollars! The sticker said $11 on it, and I was prepared to pay that, so I was pleasantly surprised, to say the least. It even has a DVD of the first episode packaged within!

Argh, now I'm going to have to try and track down all the rest of them to add to my ever-growing Dragon Flyz collection (the basis for a future website). And I won an auction of five Dragon Flyz books on ebay, so those should be coming soon, and then I can make scans of them. I still have so many things to scan and cap and summarize before I really start building the site itself. I have the basic layout and color scheme (and trust me...with my knowledge of html, it's pretty basic).
So after my semi-disappointing Winx search, I dropped by the theater for the 12:10 showing of TMNT. For not being a huge Turtles fan, I really enjoyed the movie. The basic concept behind the TMNT franchise in general is totally absurd, but it's always somehow worked because the characters are engaging and fun (further proof of my claim that good characters can save a mediocre plot or idea, but definitely not the other way around). And the characters were no letdown. The "villain" Mr. Winters was given a special depth and richness by Patrick Stewart, who always does such great work. Sarah Michelle Gellar also stood out to me as April O'Neil (who I only remember as a yellow-jumpsuited reporter, not some Lara Croft-esque ninja girl). And of course, none of it would work without our green heroes. It's almost amazing to think of layered performances coming from the mouths of giant green crime-fighting ninja turtles.
The animation was good (but sometimes seemed a little stiff, except during the action scenes, which were totally amazing). Overall, it's a very enjoyable 1.5 hours, and I recommend that you see it if you haven't! Especially if you're a bit into 80s/90s nostalgia like me.
I've been very busy lately with school, and that's pushed my other big project to the side for the moment: cleaning out my cabinet/bookcase/room/life. I never really realized just how many LEGOs (one of the few good things among much detritus) that I've accumulated over the years and just haven't dealt with. I've unearthed some pretty crazy things so far: birthday cards from when I turned 15 (6 years ago!), old animation flipbooks I made in 5th grade, Ah My Goddess stickers, old plane tickets, etc. Since I'm a packrat, this list could go on forever. In an effort to try and get organized, I've gathered many plastic tubs (from various stores - even "The Container Store" in San Jose; who knew there was a whole store devoted to storage solutions? They're very helpful there, btw.) and started arranging various collections together for easy access. Legos in this tub, Dragon Flyz in that tub, etc. Right now my room is still a disaster area, and will probably remain so until this summer when I go on break and finally have a chance to clean it all up for good. This cleaning has been many years in coming, so I don't expect to finish it quickly, by any means.
