Finished Winx Season 2!
Oct. 19th, 2006 11:33 pmI can't believe it...I'm such a Winx whore. I've basically watched two seasons in two weeks...XDDD This certainly counts in the "Overload" category of things I've done lately...>_<
But it was so worth it! I haven't enjoyed a show like this in such a long time and it really brings back all the good memories of watching cartoons as a kid. Especially since it's a 'magical girl' show (and therefore evokes warm feeling associated with Jewel Riders, Tenko, and other contemporary series).
However, I was a little disappointed in Season 2. I mean, don't get me wrong...I actually loved that it contained tons more character development than Season 1 (especially for Flora, Tecna, Musa, Brandon, and Timmy), introduced Layla (the kick-ass Fallon-type character!) and the pixies (they're so hilarious - especially Chatta!), and was generally a lot of fun. My problem lies more on the "evil" side of things. The Trix - previously the most fearsome (and with the Army of Decay in the first season, they were truly the most powerful) foes, were reduced to lackey nobodies (this problem seems to be addressed in Season 3, but that remains to be seen!) to a much less interesting (not to mention much less personally connected and well explained) villain. Darkar just wasn't incorporated enough into the overall story of the season - nor did he ever feel (despite his obvious power) really all that threatening to the Winx and Specialists.
I think that's what I'm really getting at - Season 2's story felt much less well pulled together; by the end I was like "Huh? That's the end?" But still, these can still be mildly overlooked in the face of some great characters (who really saved lackluster storyline!). If looking at it on a grade scale with season one getting a A, season two probably ends up with a B. Still good, but not quite Season 1's greatness. Luckily Season 3 really opened with a bang and looks to be shaping up as possibly the best season yet! Only time will tell!
