Vertigo sucks.  I'm just going to put that out there.

Tuesday night on the Fifth of January, I went to see Star Wars: The Force Awakens with my brother, who was in town for a visit.  I felt fine after the movie, and through breakfast the next morning.  However, around noon I started to feel a bit dizzy.  I sat down, hoping it would pass.  However, the dizziness only got worse, and soon after the room began to spin.  I tried laying down, closing my eyes, but to no avail.  A few hours went by like this until mid afternoon I decided to have my brother take me to the ER.

It pays to work at a hospital, because I got a room almost instantly, along with some oral meds that I later threw up.  They did some tests, and found out the cause of the vertigo was likely an ear stone (new word of the week: otolith!) messing up my balance.  The PA tried doing a head manipulation called the Epley maneuver, which is supposed to help, but she admitted she wasn't familiar with it, and I think it ended up causing me to throw up.  (Side note: so weird to be under the care of my coworkers!  My brother thought it was amusing how everyone from the docs to the janitorial staff was checking up on me!)

So I ended up with an IV, and some steller anti-nausea meds that helped me feel a bit better.  The ER could see no reason to admit me, though, so I had several days of feeling crazy at home.  (At one point my brother and I went to a great used bookstore.  Most of my purchases were from books at eye level, because looking too far up or down the aisles made me crazy dizzy).

It's been almost two weeks at this point, and with some Physical Therapy (who knew they could refer you to for PT for an ear problem?  I thought it was a joke at first!) I've begun my recovery.  Still, it was a crazy weird experience, and I'm hopeful it never happens again.  But since the Physical Therapist thought I had "hypovestibular function" in my right inner ear, it's possilbe it'll come back if I'm not careful.  Spending too much time on the computer was difficult if not impossilbe in the beginning, though that has somewhat improved.

So overall, a really shitty but interesting experience in retrospect.  But on the upside, I now know how to write a character with vertigo, I guess? XD

Ry! *very gently hugs*

That sucks with the vertigo. It might come off as boasting, but I knew that you could get PT for ear issues. My mom had a very as a result of her TMJ worsening and her best friend had what was basically an 'ear pearl' that severely threw off her balance before it was discovered.

Still, that is a way to look on the bright side! Do you think you'll go back to that bookstore once you recover some more?

Haha, I'm glad someone knew about it! :D

Oh, I'll definitely go back to the bookstore! It's this weird, hidden gem out in the country, located in a building behind a car lot, so there are always really interesting things to find there.

Hee! Actually, yeah, now you can write about someone on Airlandis getting struck by it! All that air pressure changing can't be good on the ear drums.

Awesome! When you do go back, let us know what you found!

would make a good test for future dragonators - who can survive the constantly changing pressure of going from Airlandis to Old Earth and back again without succumbing to vertigo

True true. I mean, the helmet probably has something like an equalizer in it or they could take medicine to combat it but for a serious case? That'd be rather dangerous.

I wonder if mutants are naturally immune to it - it would explain why Z doesn't wear his helmet post-mutation

They do have flight (gliding really) capabilities so it makes sense they'd have a kind of built-in equalizing system. Same for the dragons, which then makes even more sense for the mutants to have, given that they're supposed to be half-dragon at least.

Glad you're on the road to recovery!

Thank you! I'm amazed it's taken this long to start feeling better. Haha, didn't stop me from buying books, though! XD

well, vertigo can be a witch like that ::firm nod::

and what did you think of the Star Wars movie? [::unashamedly wanting a toy version of BB-8::]

I've seen it three times now...and I'm still not totally sure?

Like, I think them basically remaking A New Hope was perhaps not the best idea? (Droid with vital information on a desert planet finds untrained Jedi kid, go to a big cantina scene, fly X-wings through a trench to blow up a planet-sized weapon...) Sooo many of the story beats were the same, it distracted from getting into the movie.

Though I loved seeing the old characters again, of course, and the new actors were all pretty good (except Kylo Ren, who sounded like an emo teen). BB-8 is the most adorable thing since puppies. And the practical effects were great.

Apparently I have ~feelings~ about this, haha. Maybe I'll write up a proper review at some point.

There's a twitter account called Emo Kylo Ren (or something to that effect) - he and a twitter account for Luke (episode 7 Luke, to be accurate) had a fun twitter war going [one of the geek pages I follow on Facebook shared a couple of exchanges]

haven't seen it yet [planning on doing that once it hits on demand, heh] - but all I can think of hearing about Emo Kylo Ren is that it's practically Ani 2.0 XD

and I will love to read your review of the movie!

and no surprises that I've been batting around a Star Wars/Dragon Flyz x-over, heh. Z slides to the Dark side to mirror his getting turned into a mutant in Dragon Flyz canon but I need help with a good Sith name. Suggestions?

oh, and random Kylo Ren trivia fact - the guy that played him? Marine.

Glad you're one the mend! I don't know enough about vertigo to offer opinions one way or the other but I can guess it sucked.
